Summary:
Between the communities of Boxey and Coombs Cove, NL, there has been a search for Uranium. They spent $1 million and received $100,000 grant so they can start drilling in November. When they mine for uranium, it produces toxic byproducts this is lethal to your health. Radioactive waster can to go as large as many hills in the region of Boxey. The Surgeon who deals with a cancer called Thyroid cancer, says that it is very dangerous to our health. The cancer can come between 40-50 years. For the younger ones (children) is a risk to get cancer when they start the dig for the uranium. The Uranium project is dangerous, such as Radon Gas. The Radon Gas goes hundreds of miles; it contaminates all of the vegetation. When the gases come from the uranium you can’t see it or taste it in the air. This dangerous Radiation and Radon Gas last for many of years; they say it takes up to 76,000 years for it to go away. The company Kirrin Resources will be going ahead with the project.
Opinion:
My opinion about this is that the company Kirrin Resources don’t really care about all of the people’s health because this gas travels miles away. The gases go to Boxey, Harbour Breton, Belleoram, Pools Cove, St. Albans, Conne River, Rencontre East, grand bank and St. Johns. These communities can be affected. The mine that is going to go on, affects all of the people in my community of Boxey because all of the residents there thinks that their life will be damaged because of all the gases. My health is more important than the Uranium Mine., so I think that it should be stopped. The surgeon that they were talking about is right about the health issues, he is a former resident of Boxey, and he still comes there for visits. I think that all of the residents of Boxey and Coombs Cove should get together and try to stop it, before its to late.
